A Kitchen for Kaliyeka

Every Saturday in Kaliyeka Township, a team of faithful women gathers before sunrise to prepare a hot meal of nsima, meat, and fresh vegetables for up to 250 children and adults, all cooked over firewood. They have always worked with joy and lots of laughter, but the conditions in which they worked were far from easy.

For years, the team cooked in a kitchen that was too small to hold the enormous nsima pot required to feed such a large crowd. The space had poor ventilation, turning the hot months into sweltering, smoke-filled rooms that made breathing difficult and temperatures unbearable.

During the rainy season, with no room to cook inside, the women were forced outdoors—standing on muddy ground, trying to keep the fire lit and the meal safe. Yet week after week, they showed up, and the community they served was never turned away hungry.

This past summer, thanks to the generosity of our supporters and the hard work of our Malawi team, we were finally able to replace the old kitchen with a new space designed for safety, efficiency, and dignity.

The new kitchen:

  • Accommodates the giant nsima pot needed for hundreds of servings

  • Provides proper ventilation, reducing heat and smoke

  • Shelters the women from the rain and sun, allowing them to cook comfortably year-round

  • Creates a cleaner, safer environment for preparing meals for the children

But this kitchen is more than a structure. It represents:

  • Respect for the labor of the women who serve

  • Consistency and safety for the children who depend on Saturday meals

  • Dignity for a community that has long done so much with so little

  • Hope—that small steps of compassion add up to lasting transformation

To every donor and friend who helped make this possible:
Zikomo kwambiri. Thank you.

Your partnership is changing lives—one meal, one child, and now one kitchen at a time.
